About Us (written by Jarrod Bender)
The Professional Writing Minor provides an opportunity for students to develop and perfect communication and writing skills that are commonly used in the business world. In order to prepare for future career opportunities, students learn these skills and practices within two unique courses and an internship during their senior year. The minor is split into three separate tracks so students can focus on what type of writing they want to develop: Business Communication, Multimedia Communication, and Professional Editing.
The Business Communication emphasis specifically gives students hand-on experience in the world of professional business writing. Through the capstone courses, students work on a variety of assignments for real clients. These projects help to develop students’ written, visual, oral, and collaborative skills. The training students receive gives them an invaluable edge over other graduating seniors as they enter the working world.
Our Philosophy: Service Learning
Service learning incorporates community service and education, allowing Business Communication students to further develop their professional skills while assisting an organization with writing-related responsibilities. Previous organizations have benefited from Business Communication students’ press releases, brochures, grant proposals, and fundraising letters. Pursuing the Minor
Students interested in pursuing the professional writing minor must take a variety of prerequisite writing courses before being admitted into their desired emphasis. There is a diverse selection of writing courses ranging from legal writing to film writing that allow students to be exposed to a variety of writing styles before they select an emphasis that suits them best. Students will also have to submit an application for the minor during the fall quarter of their senior year. Unlike other minors, there is a selection process for the professional writing minor and not all students will be accepted.
