Overview
The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department provides a wealth of enriching leisure activities to the community at large. It is the responsibility of the Marketing and Communications office to publicize these programs throughout the Santa Barbara community to ensure that participant numbers remain consistent and the City brings in steady revenue. This particular office is in charge of many tasks including:
. Creating and publishing bi-annual Activity Guide magazine
. Writing and distributing all press releases
. Creating print ads and other promotional materials
. Submitting radio spots, and
. Content and design for the Parks and Recreation website.

Job Description
As an intern in the Office of Marketing and Communications, a student establishes responsible for carrying out written projects assigned by the Marketing and Communications supervisor. Such assignments might be:
. Informational brochure
. Sections of monthly reports
. Feature articles
. Sections of employee newsletters
. Press Releases for various events

Learning Experiences
. Valuable lessons about the writing and distribution of press releases
. Significant insight into how small office's work to produce marketing and promotional materials for large and diverse audiences
. Experience what it takes to produce and maintain effective employee communications in a departmental environment with close ties to local government
