Time Management: Success for Life
By Stephanie Tate
Let’s be honest, we all procrastinate. From homework, shopping, laundry, and class, our time spent relaxing trumps responsibility. But when deadlines hit, the stress sets in. Frantically studying or finishing a paper, you swear to be on top of time-you will never fall victim to procrastination again!
Fast-forward two weeks and you’re making the same mistake. Why? Lack of time management. Hours and minutes are not tangible, and unless you plan ahead, the day’s transgression will get the best of you. I call this the crunch cycle: precious moments where your heart races, nerves jump, throat closes, and resentments quell. But, there is a solution.
The most valuable lesson I have learned in my academic career has been time management. In order to be on top of deadlines, you have to form a game plan. These lessons resonate with life. Here are my recommendations:
Step one, write down due dates. Even if due dates change, the act of writing assignments in pen ensures responsibility and increases awareness. Next, form a game plan. Do you need to make an outline, meet with a teacher, or talk to a friend? These are important steps you should consider and begin implementing early. Third, talk to classmates. Where do they stand? Have they begun the assignment, are they making flashcards or attending review sessions? If so, jump on the bandwagon and get studying! Fourth, recheck due dates. Pull out your calendar, agenda, blackberry, whichever—and make sure you are on track. If not, revise your game plan. Note: rechecking your progress is a key step that will minimize stress and maximize benefits. Lastly, stop by your professor’s, T.A.’s, or tutor’s office. Ask questions, be open-minded, and make sure to share with them your plans and progress.
Stress and anxiety can be contained; it just takes planning. Remember that it is essential to be organized and prepared, and that deadlines will continue to sneak up on you unless you practice good time management.
